Wine & Warpaint navigates an interior world decimated by loss, deconstruction, and depression while maintaining a paradoxical commitment to hope and optimism. Their signature blend of big hooks, punk edge, and wall-of-sound energy led to them being recognized as winners of the Player Plus Studio Sessions: Powered by Fender, where they were selected by a celebrity panel of music legends and executives as one of the 26 best unsigned bands in the world. A one-person-band in the studio, multi-instrumentalist Brandon O’Neill is joined live by Abbey Ballentine, Taylor Bess, Colleen Christman, and Hannah Haupt to bring their cathartic live show to cities across the country through tireless DIY touring.
Emerging from the vibrant scene of Richmond, Virginia, Wine & Warpaint merges indie rock, pop punk, and post-hardcore into a compelling musical narrative. Their early works, including the introspective *HOMELESS* EP produced by Matt Goldman and a self-produced cover album, showcased their eclectic influences and musical versatility.
The band’s growth continued with the *Half to Life* EP, deepening their exploration of emotional landscapes. “Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants our love.“
—Rainer Maria Rilke, From Letters to a Young Poet
This insight from Rilke might as well be a guiding ethos for Wine & Warpaint, a band that transforms the raw materials of human frailty into compelling musical narratives. Emerging from Richmond, Virginia’s fertile music scene, Wine & Warpaint brandishes an eclectic fusion of indie rock, pop punk, and post-hardcore, positioning themselves at the confluence of nostalgia and innovation. Spearheaded by the introspective Brandon O’Neill, the band’s ethos is a tapestry woven with threads of existential angst and defiant hope, casting an earnest dialogue between the individual and the collective psyche.
Wine & Warpaint’s musical voyage began in the artistic quarters of Richmond, Virginia, where multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Brandon O’Neill’s vision for a sound steeped in introspection and rebellion first took shape. Gathering a diverse group of musicians, including Abbey Ballentine, Taylor Bess, Colleen Christman, and Hannah Haupt, the band fused their eclectic influences into a distinctive blend of indie rock, pop punk, and post-hardcore.
This lineup, solidified over shared aspirations and a series of dynamic EP releases, grew organically as they refined their craft through local gigs and self-produced recordings. With each step, Wine & Warpaint carved out a niche in the music scene, their journey marked by a deepening of artistic expression and a commitment to exploring the boundaries of their genre, while expanding their audience beyond Richmond through tireless DIY touring.
Wine & Warpaint’s discography traces a bold arc through the modern music landscape, marked by an adventurous exploration of genre and emotion. Their initial forays into the recording world began with the introspective *HOMELESS* EP, produced by Matt Goldman—an effort that laid the groundwork for their signature blend of poignancy and power. This was followed by a self-produced 9-song cover album that showcased their versatility and deep musical literacy, reinterpreting influences while highlighting their adeptness at transformation and reinterpretation.
The narrative thread continued with their sophomore EP, *Half to Life*, which delved deeper into their evolving sound. This release struck a chord for its raw, emotionally charged lyricism paired with robust musical compositions that resonated well beyond their initial fan base. Critics noted the EP’s ability to weave dense emotional threads with accessible pop punk energy, creating a compelling dialogue between listener and musician.
The culmination of their early years comes now with their debut album, Disassociate. This ambitious project is described as a “rhapsodic introduction” to Wine & Warpaint’s full expressive range, blending big hooks, punk edge, and a wall of sound that envelops the listener in a complex, sonic narrative. The album kicks off with the aggressive “The View’s So Good With Your Head in the Ground,” setting a tone of confrontation and contemplation that pervades the record. Tracks like “Bad Nihilist” and “Bring Me Back” showcase their ability to balance straight-up rock energy with modern emo stylings, while the orchestral finisher “Synchrony” confirms their penchant for dramatic, genre-bending conclusions.
Wine & Warpaint’s discography not only charts their growth as artists but also as storytellers, with each release acting as a chapter in a larger narrative of personal and communal evolution. Their work is both a sanctuary and a battleground, a place where listeners can find solace in shared struggles and triumphs—a defining feature that makes their music resonate so powerfully in the contemporary rock scene.
Wine & Warpaint’s sound explores the liminal spaces between genres. This approach has garnered them accolades, notably as a standout in the global unsigned band scene, spotlighted through their victory in the Player Plus Studio Sessions powered by Fender. Their music resonates as both a sanctuary and a battleground, reflecting the dual nature of their themes—each track a study in the balance of internal strife and external harmony.
As they continue to chart their course, Wine & Warpaint’s narrative is one of continuous transformation, driven by a commitment to authenticity and sonic exploration. Their work is a clarion call to those who find solace in music’s ability to transcend life’s cacophonies, offering a soundtrack to personal revolutions and communal reckonings alike.
In an era where music often tiptoes around genuine expression, Wine & Warpaint stands as a testament to the power of raw, unfiltered artistry. Their journey is more than a series of songs; it’s an ongoing dialogue with the zeitgeist, a beacon for the weary, and a herald of the potency embedded in emotive, modern rock.

DEBUT ALBUM:
Disassociate
Disassociate, the debut full-length from Richmond, VA quintet Wine & Warpaint, is an ambitious, rhapsodic introduction to the band’s signature blend of big hooks, punk edge, and wall of sound energy. Honed over three EPs and a covid cover album, the 12 track LP makes full use of the band’s musical breadth that led them to be recognized in 2021 as winners of the Player Plus Studio Sessions: Powered by Fender, where they were selected by a celebrity panel of music legends and executives as one of the 26 best unsigned bands in the world.
The album kicks off with the aggressive opener “The View’s So Good With Your Head in the Ground” that features an extended spoken word outro, setting the tone for the album’s left-of-center pop punk approach. The if-it-ain’t-broke straight-up rock energy of “Bad Nihilist” gives way to the modern emo pop stylings of “Bring Me Back” that would be right at home as a Bring Me the Horizon b-side. The 7/4 time signature change over screamed vocals in “Shattered” immediately segueing into the introspective duet “Is It Over” in some way gives credence to the genre-bending orchestral finisher “Synchrony”, if anything by setting the stage to expect the the unexpected.
